Caravel escapes with win over Archmere
With under a minute to play and his team on the Caravel 28-yard line, Archmere quarterback Brian Rogers dropped back and rifled a pass down the left sideline toward halfback Francis McVey. The sure-handed running back turned at the 1-yard line and watched the ball cradle into his hands. He then spun and plunged into the end zone before any of the Bucs’ defenders could reach him, pulling the Auks within a point.
But the jubilation on the Archmere sideline ended just as quickly as it began when Ben Revak’s PAT kick was blocked, setting off a celebration across the field as No. 3 Caravel escaped with a 20-19 win.
Early on it appeared Caravel (3-2) would literally run away with the game. The Bucs scored on their first two possessions when Aaron Hudson scampered 34 yards for a score, and a fumble on the Auks’ first play from scrimmage led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Dennis Robinson.
But Archmere (2-3) settled in, scoring on their next possession on a 47-yard pass from Rogers to Francis McVey. Archmere held Caravel scoreless on its next two possessions and Rogers hooked up with Christian Nocket for a 33-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 13.
Neither team scored on its first three possessions of the second half. But Hudson put Caravel ahead for good early in the fourth quarter with a nifty 74-yard touchdown run up the right sideline.
Rogers’ near-heroic third touchdown pass was set up when Caravel was pinned deep in its own zone late in the game and forced to punt, giving the Auks the ball on the Bucs’ 28-yard line.
Hudson was named the Crown Trophy Player of the game after finishing with 110 yards on nine carries and scoring two touchdowns.
Next week’s 1290 The Ticket High School Game of the Week will be broadcast from historic Baynard Stadium in Wilmington as Howard hosts St. Georges in a clash between two Top 10 teams.
