A costly turnover late in the first half turned out to be the turning point in the game as Woodbridge upset Appoquinimink, 21-13, in the DFRC Kickoff Classic Thursday night at Jaguars Stadium.
With Appoquinimink leading 13-7 late in the second quarter and facing a fourth down, the Jaguars lined up to punt. But an errant snap was recovered by the Blue Raiders on the Jaguars’ 35-yard line and two plays later junior quarterback Logan Wescott scampered 20 yards into the end zone to give the Blue Raiders a 14-13 halftime lead.
Woodbridge (1-0) was not finished yet.
Anthony Jefferson’s 31-yard punt return on Woodbridge’s second possession of the second half set up Ricky Rayford’s 6-yard touchdown run and the Blue Raider defense held the Jaguars scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.
Jefferson scored Woodbridge’s first touchdown on an 89-yard kickoff return and made an impact on both sides of the ball for the Blue Raiders. For his efforts he was named the Crown Trophy Player of the Game.
Appoquinimink (0-1) got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Shane Anderson snuck in from 2 yards out at the 3:03 mark of the first quarter. The Jaguars scored their second and final touchdown in the second quarter on Demetrius Ward’s 18-yard run.
