Players of the Game

Delaware’s only all sports radio station, 1290 The Ticket, is proud to announce the fifth annual 1290 The Ticket High School Basketball Awards. The All-Ticket Team was based upon the players that participated for schools located within the station’s coverage area of New Castle County, while the post-season awards were determined by play in the State Tournament.

For the first time in the history of the awards, repeat winners were selected for the two most coveted honors: Player of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Sanford’s Khallid Hart was chosen to the All-Ticket Team for the first time and was also selected as the Championship Game MVP. In addition, Hart receives the Tournament Most Outstanding Player award two seasons after winning the trophy as a sophomore in 2010. This year, Andre Horne played for a different team than his previous season of Delaware High School Basketball competition, but his resulting award remains the same. After winning Player of the Year in 2010 as a sophomore at Hodgson, Horne now takes home the trophy as a senior at Newark. Joining Hart and Horne on the All-Ticket Team are Ben Bentil of Saint Andrew’s, Norville Carey of Red Lion, and Tyaire Hudson of Hodgson.

Senior Khallid Hart ended his high school basketball career as the first player in Delaware history to win three boys basketball state championships. The 6’2” captain of the three-peat Warriors averaged nearly 16 points per game during a regular season which featured his team losing only once and going end to end as the state’s number one ranked squad. The point guard upped his game for the state tournament and scored 21 points against both A.I. DuPont and Howard followed by 19 points vs. Concord at the Bob Carpenter Center. Hart capped off his phenomenal run with a 19 point performance in the championship against Newark that included 10-of-13 from the free throw line.

In addition to making his second All-Ticket Team, Newark’s Andre Horne also gets the Player of the Year nod for the second time in his career. In the 6’4” forward’s first season at Newark High School, Horne averaged 22 points and eight rebounds on his way to leading the Yellowjackets to their first championship game appearance since 2008. Horne scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season and saved perhaps his best game for the last of the regular season when he dropped 29 points against his former team, Hodgson, during a victory in the Blue Hen Conference Championship Game.

A former teammate of Andre Horne’s at Hodgson Vo-Tech, point guard Tyaire Hudson finished his career with the Silver Eagles as a four year starter. Hudson scored his 1,000th career point this season during a 1290 The Ticket Game of the Week broadcast against Polytech and helped lead his team to the Final Four. The 5’11” senior was part of a legendary “Big Three” trio along with Paris Ridgeway-Higgs and Anthony Bowers that combined to win 68 total games in four seasons.

No one played or stood taller this season than sophomore sensation, Ben Bentil of Saint Andrew’s. The 6’9”, 220 lb. center led the Cardinals to a number two ranking in the final poll of the regular season and a number five seed in the state tournament. The big man helped his team improve by four wins in 2011-12, the biggest being a victory over the eventual champion Sanford Warriors. In the only loss that Sanford would suffer the entire season, Bentil led all players with 21 points and added 10 rebounds and two blocks. Having already received looks from mid to high major colleges, the 10th grader has established Saint Andrew’s as a program on the rise.

Not eligible to compete for a State Championship in 2012, but still a top player in Delaware, Norville Carey of Red Lion rounds out the All-Ticket Team. The Morehead State signee averaged a team high 19 points and blocked a team high 22 shots while helping to lead the Lions to a 19-4 record against a tough out of state schedule. The 6’6” senior scored 20 or more points in 10 games and finished with a season high 35 points against Princeton Day Academy (MD).

Each winner and school will be presented one-of-a-kind customized trophies courtesy of Crown Trophy in People’s Plaza. For more information on past and present winners, visit 1290theticket.com.
